The Importance of Maryland’s Manufacturing Industry

Manufacturing is an excellent source of jobs as well as the segment from which is derived a significant portion of the nation’s wealth. When a country exports more than it imports, it typically receives more money than it spends, resulting in greater overall wealth for the country. The history of the manufacturing industry in Maryland runs deep. During the early 1800s, the first industries in Maryland were centered around the Baltimore shipyards. Small ironworks cast parts for sailing vessels and several laborers worked as shipbuilders. By the 1850s, Baltimore, Maryland was also producing instruments to measure weather as well as fertilizers. By the 1930s, Baltimore became a major center of metal refining. Today, Maryland remains an extremely important manufacturer of many goods such as:

  • Automobiles and automobile parts
  • Steel
  • Spices
  • Scented Candles
  • Solar Panels
  • Cutting Edge Flu Vaccines

The manufacturing industry in Maryland is led by the printing and publishing industry, the food industry, the machinery industry and the chemical industry.

Based in Edgewood, Maryland is the U.S. headquarters of the world’s largest supplier of tools used to detect weapons, explosives and chemical threats. In fact if you’ve ever been through airport security, the equipment that was used to scan your luggage was most likely produced in Maryland.

Manufacturing provides a major income for the state of Maryland. In fact in 2010, the total value of shipments of manufactured goods from Maryland was $39.9 billion and the total payroll by Maryland manufacturers was $6.1 billion paid to 106,807 industry workers.

Manufacturers are quickly noticing the benefit that being “made in Maryland” has on the overall global economy. Since the 2008 recession, the output of U.S. workers in manufacturing jobs is up nine percent due to improved productivity, continuing innovation, new research and development and the important economic development of U.S. universities. Manufacturing processes are now being done with less labor, cheaper natural gas and at a lowered cost of credit. In addition, three new jobs are created for every one manufacturing job.

The state of Maryland offers a competitive environment for manufacturers. There are approximately 3,912 manufacturing companies in Maryland that employ approximately 115,086 people. The manufacturing industry in Maryland remains a vital part of the state’s economic future.

Bay Industrial Group of Baltimore, Maryland provides industrial and manufacturing facilities with state of the art manufacturing solutions for a variety of different manufacturing challenges. For more information please contact Bay Industrial Group today.

Overhead Equipment and Systems for a Variety of Industries

Overhead cranes are typically used to move extremely heavy and awkward items from one place to another. The weight capacity of overhead cranes can range from 2 to 3 tons to 500 tons or more. Some of the most common types of overhead cranes include overhead bridge cranes, workstation cranes, manipulators, monorails, jib cranes, gantry systems and many more.

With so many individual manufacturing needs, overhead cranes have become an indispensible tool for many different industries. In fact a large number of industries utilize overhead cranes for a number of different applications. These industries include:

  • Steel Mills
  • Petroleum Production
  • The Automotive Industry
  • The Construction Industry
  • Power Plants
  • The Aerospace Industry
  • The Pharmaceutical Industry
  • The Railroad Industry
  • Appliance Industries
  • Woodworking Industries

In the 1950s and 1960s, as technology progressed, especially in the field of electronics, industries were being pressured to increase production while still employing the same amount of floor space. Equipment that could move materials overhead offered several advantages over their competitors in the broadly defined materials handling industry. Today, overhead cranes are still utilized in work environments that are unable to accommodate a floor conveyor, or that have limited floor space.

There are several different types of overhead cranes, all of which serve different purposes. An overhead bridge crane runs on an elevated runway system and provides three axes of hook motion. A gantry crane is similar to a bridge crane except it runs on a track at floor level. The bridge carries the hoist and trolley and is supported by a pair of rigid steel legs which are carried by a pair of end trucks along the floor level runway. A jib crane consists of a pivoting head and boom assembly which carries a hoist and trolley unit. The pivoting head is supported by a floor-mounted mast that provides 360 degrees of boom rotation or by an existing building column which provides 180 degrees of boom rotation. A monorail is specialized equipment that can be extremely effective when properly designed. Only two directions of hook travel are afforded by the monorail; either up and down or along the axis of the monorail beam.

Many different industries can benefit from using overhead equipment for a number of different applications. When properly used, overhead equipment can increase the speed at which things get accomplished, help workers safely transport heavy objects and improve a company’s overall efficiency. Bay Industrial Group offers extensive knowledge and experience on all types of overhead equipment and systems. They work directly with your company to design overhead solutions that fit your specific industry’s needs.  For more information please contact Bay Industrial Group today.
